Type Locality and Naming

OUTCROP: Its type section is in Malachimata Hill, west of Surendranagar.

Synonym: Wadahawan Fm (spelling version used by Directorate of Hydrocarbons)

Lithology and Thickness

Sandstone and Limestone. It is divided into 3 members: (i) Upper Member: consists of quartzitic-sandstone occasionally current-bedded, pebbly and gritty. (ii) Middle Member: sandy shale, chocolate brown to red with impure fossiliferous limestone bed, and (iii) Lower Member: sandstone, ferruginous, fine to coarse grained, moderately sorted, pebbly with lenticular shale.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Lower boundary is gradational with the underlying Dhrangadhra Fm.

Upper contact

Upper boundary is unconformable with the Deccan Traps Fm.

Regional extent

Exposed in the north-eastern part of Saurashtra Peninsula overlying Dharangdhara Fm (Dhrangadhra Fm) and is likely to be present westwards underneath the basalt cover.
